The journey to success starts with great enthusiasm but along the way things happen. The things that happen could be positive or negative. If positive, there is a tendency to allow success to reduce the level of commitment and when negative, there is a tendency to lose that hunger for success. Whatever happens, you have to take responsibility of staying hungry for success. I had my first degree in Mass Communication and majored in Public Relations and Advertising (PRAD) at the University of Lagos. Naturally I would have gone back to the Department of Mass Communication for my Masters like many of my counterparts. Having worked at a full-fledged marketing communications agency, I decided to study Marketing for my second degree. At the University of Lagos, that meant I would have to cross from the Faculty of Social Sciences to the Faculty of Business Administration. Moved by excitement, I looked forward to a new and challenging experience. But I got more than I bargained for. I had to take new and unfriendly courses that I began to wonder if I had not made a wrong decision to study marketing. Being a stickler for excellence, I braced up for the challenge and fortunately my grades have been so far looking very good. Distinction was and is still my mission. At times, people embark on a project with a lot of excitement but by the time obstacles start to appear, that excitement gets dampened. Here’s the point: you have to look for a way to sustain the hunger you had for success at the beginning. It is not going to be easy but it is what you can do.
If you are going to climb the ladder of greatness, you must have a sustained hunger for success. You need to have a strong desire or craving to work for the actualization of your dreams of greatness. A sage has said that the evidence that you desire something is pursuit. That means you cannot claim to be hungry and you won’t be up and doing about the object of your interest. Hunger unleashes new energy in you to reach out for your goals.
Staying hungry for success is a responsibility. It is possible to lose enthusiasm as time goes on as other things begin to steal one’s attention away gradually. At times, it could be because the results are not coming in as expected. If care is not taken, failure can drain one’s enthusiasm and take away positive hunger. But you are not going to allow this to happen to you. Once your hunger disappears, your dreams of greatness will also disappear with time.
Don’t lose your hunger. Look for things that can help to sustain your hunger. Inspirational articles, books, audio or video messages can help here. You can also attend events, programs and shows that can help stir you up and get you hungry the more. This is where mentors come in. If you have a mentor or an accountability partner, that person could also help remind you of your dreams of greatness. The ups-and-downs of life have a way of weighing down one’s spirit. You are going to need encouragers in your journey to greatness. Encouragers help you stay hungry and committed to your dreams.
